A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Monday:
The three newly promoted teams in the Premier League — Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United — have no wins and just a single point between them so far. Pointless Burnley looks to change that on Monday at Nottingham Forest. Vincent Kompany’s Burnley already has conceded the most goals (11) in the league after playing just three games. Luton has lost four straight and Sheffield United has four losses and a 2-2 draw at home to struggling Everton. Burnley can take some hope from having won 1-0 at Forest in the League Cup last month.
Surprise team Girona aims to win its fourth straight game when it visits Granada in the Spanish league. The Catalan club defeated Getafe, Sevilla and Las Palmas after opening with a draw at Real Sociedad. Another victory would leave Girona among the league leaders. Granada is near the bottom of the table after three losses in its first four games. Its latest setback was a 5-3 defeat at Sociedad.
Hellas Verona will be looking to bounce back from its first defeat of the season when it hosts Bologna. Verona beat Empoli and Roma before losing at Sassuolo before the international break. Bologna lost its opener against AC Milan but earned an impressive draw at Juventus before beating Cagliari. Salernitana is still searching for its first win of the season and it hosts Torino, which beat Genoa in the last round.
After a two-week hiatus due to international break, Nottingham Forest and Burnley are set to lock horns once again, this time in the Premier League. The match-up at the City Ground on Monday will be rife with tension, especially considering it comes just two weeks after Burnley eliminated Forest from the EFL Cup.
Forest handed debuts to Ibrahim Sangare and Callum Hudson-Odoi for the visit of Vincent Kompany’s side. Both men arrived on transfer deadline day but were not eligible for the win at Chelsea before the international break, with Anthony Elanga and Gonzalo Montiel also coming in.
Burnley, who won at the City Ground in the Carabao Cup last month, made two changes from the side that were hammered at Tottenham, with Josh Brownhill and Charlie Taylor coming in.
Cooper opts for four alterations to his starting XI that overcame the Blues at Stamford Bridge. Hudson-Odoi and Sangare, signed from Chelsea and PSV respectively on deadline day, come in for their debuts, while World Cup winner Montiel and ex-Manchester United winger Elanga get the nod on either flank. Serge Aurier, Danilo and Ryan Yates miss out entirely and the other replacement, Danilo, drops to the bench, which also includes new loanee Origi.
Burnley have endured a turbulent start to life back in the Premier League, losing comfortably to Manchester City and Aston Villa before a 5-2 demolition by Tottenham at Turf Moor. Yet to win this season in three league games, Vincent Kompany’s Clarets will be desperate to get their first points on the board here.
Forest have made a credible start to some tough opening league fixtures, with one-goal defeats at both Manchester United and Arsenal coming in between a win over Sheffield United. A 1-0 triumph away at Chelsea last time out will only boost Steve Cooper’s confidence, but his side were defeated by Burnley in the EFL Cup second round when these two teams met at this ground on August 30.
Forest have made a solid start to the Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win away at Chelsea potentially kickstarting a special season. Steve Cooper's side was delighted with his team’s performance at Stamford Bridge but will now want to see them back it up with another three points.
The Nigerian forward leads the line again this evening and has the chance to move just behind Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot with a goal or more.
We are 20 minutes away from kick-off, and if the Tricky Trees were to win, they would move onto nine points, which given their fixtures, would be an excellent return from the start of the season.
